Aka•Demos
Where Bilingual Brilliance Begins.
Aka•Demos was founded in the United States as an educational initiative that honors the roots of the Spanish language while embracing a modern and innovative vision of learning. Our name is a fusion of the Greek term Akadēmía—which gave rise to the word academy—and the English abbreviation “AKA” (“also known as”). It also alludes to the Greek hero Academus, whose garden was the setting for Plato’s first philosophical school. Aka•Demos represents a space for teaching, evolution, and linguistic discovery.
Aka•Demos emerged as the evolution of a Spanish language education project first established in the United States by its founder, Ms. María Elena Garmendia, an educator with over 40 years of experience in bilingual programs for children, adolescents, and adults. Originally launched as Maria’s Language Academy, the institution grew and transformed into Aka•Demos to reflect a broader, modern vision inspired by classical academic tradition and the development of bilingual thinkers. For more than three decades, Ms. María also directed a highly respected language academy in Caracas, known for its excellence in English and French instruction.
Bringing this international legacy to the United States, Ms. María continued her mission by creating an educational space where strong pedagogical foundations, a deep understanding of child development, and modern language-acquisition strategies come together. Later, her daughter Andreina Mayz, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication and was trained within the family institution as an educator, joined to strengthen and expand the academy. With her background, Ms. Andreína helped modernize Aka•Demos’s platforms, integrate digital learning tools, and broaden academic programs—always maintaining the warmth and personalized approach that define our philosophy.
Today, Aka•Demos offers structured Spanish programs for students of all ages with a comprehensive focus on listening, communication, reading, writing, and cultural awareness. What makes us truly innovative is our advanced curriculum, which teaches children how to read and write in Spanish at an early age—helping them build literacy, confidence, and bilingual fluency far beyond traditional programs. At Aka•Demos, we don’t simply teach Spanish. We cultivate bilingual minds—thinkers with confidence, depth, and a global perspective.
